UPSL Announces Minneapolis City SC as Midwest Conference Team

Minneapolis (Minn.)-Based Club Joins Midwest Conference West Division
Published Oct 2, 2019

October 2, 2019 – Los Angeles – The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) is pleased to announce Minneapolis City SC as a member kicking off with the 2020 Spring Season.

Based in Minneapolis (Minn.), Minneapolis City SC 2 will begin UPSL play in the Midwest Conference West Division I and host its UPSL homes games at Edor Nelson Field on the campus of Augsburg University (2324 Butler Place South, Minneapolis, MN 55454).

United Premier Soccer League Commissioner Yan Skwara said, "We are thrilled that Minneapolis City SC has made the decision to join the UPSL Midwest Conference for the 2020 Spring Season. Mpls City SC will be a great addition to an already competitive division with eight teams in the State of Minnesota and growing. This new team expansion is key from a travel budget standpoint as we as a league continue to push to have teams within a geographical proximity to one another while at the same time not stepping on each other's toes. Mpls City SC is a successful club with a quality management team that has a strong and clear direction for the future. We wish the club the best of success as it prepares for the 2020 Spring Season."

Minneapolis City SC will continue its participation in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). The club is the back-to-back NPSL North Division champions. Mpls City SC 2 will exclusively compete in the UPSL.

Dan Hoedeman is President of Minneapolis City Soccer Club. Hoedeman, an advertising agency executive, is one of the founders of Minneapolis City SC and has overseen the club's rise from nothing more than a Twitter handle to substantial, successful, and "famous on the internet."

"We're excited for our U23's to join the UPSL and be competing in a league after two seasons playing an independent schedule. "It's a good level and a competitive conference and one that will give them the kind of challenges necessary to elevate their game," Hoedeman said.

Ryan Nichols is the new head coach of the Minneapolis City SC 2. An all-conference defender at St. Paul (Minn.)'s Bethel University (MIAC), Nichols played under head coach Jeremy Iwaszkowiec, who helped shape MPLS City's sporting set-up. In addition to Minneapolis City, Nichols coaches at Fusion Soccer Club and De La Salle High School in Minneapolis.

"The UPSL gives our guys extra structure and motivation. We faced a few UPSL teams last season, but it's different when it matters in the standings. I'm excited for it," Nichols said.

Adam Pribyl is Technical Director of Minneapolis City SC. Pibyl is a co-founder and formerly the club's head coach, steering the team to an undefeated season and NPSL North Conference title in 2017.

"This is a big step up for the team. It's a different mentality when you're competing for a trophy, against established clubs with established players. Can't wait for it," Pribyl said.

Jon Bisswurm is a co-founder of Minneapolis City SC. A former player for Kaiserslautern in Germany, Bisswurm's keen soccer mind has helped move the club forward. He focuses on player recruiting and on co-hosting the club's unofficial podcast, 'The People's Pitch'.

"This is a step we've wanted to take and are excited to take. It's extra fun," Bisswurm said.

The club will announce its upcoming game schedule.
